Wow. . .in my last post, I chided myself for being on the Jay Ramsperger schedule of updating this here blog thingy. Well, I guess I have to apologize to Jay now, because it turns out that he's updating his blog more frequently than I'm updating this one. That's a pretty sad state of affairs right there. But, since I am still paying for this webspace. . .which, for the last year or so, hasn't been much more than a place to store pictures of our dogs. . .I suppose I'd better do something with it, hey?
(I should probably update this version of Geeklog at some point, too. . .not sure when that will occur, exactly, but I'm sure I'll be right on it.)
To be honest, the biggest reason that I'm not updating this site with any regularity any more is the insane success of The Daily Norseman. . .which, if you haven't heard, is only the greatest Minnesota Vikings blog on this here Interweb. Right now, DN is in the midst of its biggest month ever, having racked up (as of this very moment) 65,507 hits for the month. Yes, it's already our biggest month ever, and there are still nine full days left in March. Our prior high-water mark prior to this was February 2009, where we had 52,382 hits. So, the previous record for most hits in a month for the site was a short month, and we've already surpassed that mark with 1/3 of this month left to go.
So, yeah, things are going relatively well on that front, you could say. And things are only going to get better, as SBNation (the network that DN is a part of) has recently partnered up with Yahoo! Sports, as you can see by their Vikings' team page here. Yahoo! has been berry, berry good to us traffic-wise, and I'm sure that will only continue to get better.
As far as the rest of life in general goes, things really couldn't be much better. Casey and I are doing wonderfully, as always. . .we celebrated seven years of wedded bliss on 1 March, which is awesome. I never thought I'd find a woman that would tolerate my bullshit for seven minutes, never mind seven years. And I still love her every bit as much now as I did the day I married her.
I took my stab at this year's version of the Weighted Airman Promotion System test on the 16th, and now I get the joy of waiting until June to learn whether or not I've made E-6 (Tech Sergeant) or not. I'm not trying to get my hopes up too far. . .but based on what I think I did on the PFE and the SKT, and the fact that the cut-off is projected to (hopefully) go down again this year, I'd like to think that I stand a pretty good chance of making it this year. I missed it by 5.64 points in 2008, and I started out this year with almost 15 more points than I did last year thanks to EPR scores, time in service, and time in grade. . .so, unless I really crapped the bed on the tests (which I'm relatively sure I did not), I think I'm going to have something to celebrate come mid-to-late June.
On that front, congrats to Jay for making IT1. I think computer guys are IT, anyway. I know our Navy folks in the weather schoolhouse are AG. . .pretty sure I've heard Jay mention IT in the past. Ah, well, if I'm wrong, I'm guessing he'll correct me.
I'm currently winning the everlasting battle of the bulge. I went out and picked up my own copy of The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer, too. After much deliberation, I think I'm going to give this a shot. . .this time without the psychotic training partner to throw me off. The program outlined in the book is 16 weeks, and the book says that the main pre-requisite is to be able to jog for 30 minutes without stopping before you start the program. I think the next six weeks can help me to do that. . .should be able to, anyway. . .and then I can start focusing on the program itself. This will get my weight down. . .and hopefully keep it down. . .while allowing me to kick ass on my AF PT tests and all that other good stuff.
So, yes, I will be running a marathon sooner rather than later. The date I'm actually shooting for running the actual race on is 6 September (the day before Labor Day). There's a race up in Tupelo, MS that day. . .it's the only one really near here around that time frame, and it's not terribly far to drive. Everything I've seen shows that it's a really good race, too. So, we'll see how that goes. Just have to get into the mindset of getting the job done.
Other than that, there's not a whole lot else happening in Gonzo world right now. Hopefully I can get back into the habit of updating this thing a little more frequently. I think I'll be tracking my marathon progress here. . .using the site that I had planned on using previously would just gin up memories of the aforementioned psycho, and nobody wants that. So, with that, I'll sign off for now. Have a good one, folks!

Apparently I'm under the impression that I'm now on the Jay Ramsperger schedule of updating my site.
(Just kidding, Jay. . .but hey, as long as you're out there and possibly reading this, do you suppose you could accept my MySpace request at some point?)
So, what's been up in my world for the last. . .*checks watch*. . .eh, however long? Glad you asked.
The main reason for my lack of updates here is, once again, the increasing success of The Daily Norseman, which is, quite frankly, the best damn Minnesota Vikings-related site on the Interweb. March 2008 has already been our biggest month ever, and we're still a few hours away from hitting 23 March. This is the first month ever that the site has gone over 20,000 monthly hits. . .and it's the freaking off-season! With the draft coming up and what I hope will be an exciting 2008 season for the Beloved Purple, the site should only become more successful, which will be awesome.
It's been a great opportunity to be able to work for SBNation. . .and to think I got the chance to work there based on the post I wrote [Vince McMahon mode]ON THIS VERY SITE[/Vince McMahon mode] after Daunte Culpepper's knee injury back in October of 2005. Man, has it been that long? The next step is to be regularly getting paid for running the site, and it appears that SBNation will hopefully be on their way to that by the beginning of 2009.
Speaking of getting paid, it looks like yours truly will (hopefully. . .knock on wood) be working at one of the local casinos here in the next couple of weeks. I applied for a part-time position as a Player's Club representative at the Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino in downtown Biloxi. Hopefully I'll be able to work weekends and every other Friday (since we have every other Friday off around here). I figured that while Casey is working (more on that in a bit), I could either sit on my ass in front of my computer at home and make $0 an hour. . .which is what I'd be doing. . .or I could sit on my ass in front of a computer at the Beau Rivage and make $9 an hour. The latter sounded preferable by a large margin. So, I'm just waiting for them to call me back about it. One of my co-workers at the schoolhouse worked there for about six months, so hopefully that will help me get my foot in the door.
Speaking of my beautiful wife Casey, she's been out of work for a while. At the end of November, she caught a pretty nasty case of pneumonia and was in the ICU at the Keesler Medical Center for about a week and a half. As you can imagine, it was pretty hard on her physically, but she's finally starting to come back around. She technically still has her job doing housekeeping on base, but I'm hoping that she finds something less physically demanding and stressful for her own good. . .so she's applied to the Beau Rivage as well as a front desk person. Still waiting on the callback from that, too, but their website said that they had nine openings, so there's got to be room there for someone as lovely, courteous, intelligent, and beautiful as her.
That marathon thing that I mentioned a while back? Yeah, not so much. . .not because I lost my desire to do it, but because my training partner developed a major case of bitchbecrazyitis. My theory? She wanted to ride Space Mountain and couldn't get past the fact that no more tickets were being sold. At least, that's my theory. . .everyone else's mileage may vary (but they're wrong). You can read about it at the link to the blog I was putting up about it a little further down the page there.
Life as an instructor is still pretty good. Just passed off my most recent class. . .I hope to hell that they learned as much as I think they did. . .I don't need to go back into work on Wednesday and have their new instructor telling me that the students are saying that I never taught them (insert something that I know damn well I taught them here), because that crap just annoys me. Also, being an instructor didn't help me nearly as much with WAPS testing as I hoped it would. . .but, hey, there's always next year, right? Even though I REALLY, REALLY hope that I made it this time around, I don't think I'm going to get my hopes up too high. Sure, I'll be disappointed if I don't make it, but life will go on, I suppose.
And, really, that's about everything for now. I'll try to be a little better about keeping this updated, but if The Daily Norseman keeps growing at the rate it has, I might not have the time.
Take care, folks. . .hope everyone out there is well.

Remember waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when Casey and I were living in Tacoma and I went through the whole saga of pre-ordering an XBox 360 from a place called Alliwire?
(If not, you can click on the "Video Games" link under Topics and get a recap of the whole sordid affair.)
Well, it turns out that Alliwire.com owner Dillon "Fucking Scam Artist" Millsap is at it again, this time running a rip-off site called Entertain Extreme.
Here's the only tip that I can give you on this front. Don't ever, ever, ever, EVER give this fraud any money for anything. Ever.
You've been warned.

Hey, two days in a row with an update. Call it the "Gonzo justifies what he's spending on bandwidth and webspace every month" tour or something.
So anyway, yesterday I mentioned a "significant long-term fitness goal" that I've finally established. . .but in the interest of making this post at least semi-interesting, there's a story that goes along with it.
This. . .is that story.
In the 335 Training Squadron at wonderful Keesler Air Force Base, we have two different varieties of mandatory PT. We have the regular staff PT that takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays. . .and then we have what's called "Focus Group" PT, which is for people that either have low scores on their Air Force Fitness Test or just feel the need to do more PT. I, personally, prefer the Focus Group because. . .well, because Staff PT just doesn't do a whole heck of a lot for me. The workouts at the Focus Group help me out much more than regular workouts do.
So at the beginning of July, the fearless leader of the Focus Group put together an "8-week challenge" for anyone to come out and start. The main thrust of it was that by the end of the 8 weeks (which has turned into 10 weeks because of weather, illness, and numerous other things), you'd be able to do 30 straight minutes of running with no problems. Now, my official fitness test isn't until late September/early October, but rather than waiting until the last minute and freaking out, I decided to get proactive and take control of the whole fitness thing.
Well, we had a few people show up for the first few sessions. . .but to this point, I believe that I'm the only person that has attended every session. I got to the track on Friday afternoon after work. . .and I was, indeed, the only person that showed up besides the Focus Group leader. We decided we weren't feeling terribly energetic, so we just walked a couple of miles around the track and conversed. A few laps into the walk, she says "Oh, I forgot to tell you!"
Now, ordinarily. . .it's rare that good news follows this sequence of words. So, I expected to hear some sort of bad news. Why? I don't know. But I did. The rest of the conversation went like this.
Her: "We're running a marathon next year."
Me: "Really? Who is this 'we,' exactly?"
Her: "Oh, it's me. . .TSgt So-and-so (didn't catch a name) and (didn't catch the other name)"
*pause*
Her: "Oh, and you."
I looked around to confirm that nobody else was there and that she was, indeed, talking to me.
She was.
So, after some discussion, it turns out that she has a book with a 5-month training program in it to prepare you to run a marathon. The object is not necessarily to run the whole way or set speed records or anything. . .just to finish. The program apparently builds you up to 18 miles. . .significantly less than the length of an actual 26.2 mile marathon, but a distance that's not insignificant.
I've never attempted anything like this before, obviously. I know it's going to drain me. I know there's going to be pain involved.
And you know what? I think I like it.
So, sometime in the next year, yours truly will be running a marathon. I don't know where, I don't know when. . .but it will happen.

Well. . .it certainly has been a while since I've thrown an update up here, hey? Let's remedy that.
The largest reason that I haven't posted here in so long is the success of The Daily Norseman. I've been running the site for nearly 13 months now, and we should get our 60,000th hit sometime next week. Traffic should only pick up more with the football season upon us once again. I couldn't possibly be happier with how the site has gone to this point. I hoped it would be popular, but I didn't think it would get this big. Granted, there are some sites on SBNation that get more hits in a day than I do in a week, but for a team that isn't supposed to be particularly good and that wasn't particularly exciting, I think we're doing okay.
Still playing poker, kind of. I left $5 in my FTP account and withdrew the rest, using it to screw around a bit at the $.05/.10 NL tables. I've fluctuated up and down a bit, but I currently have $15.95, which isn't bad. A couple of bad beats have kept me from being significantly higher. . .well, as "significantly higher" as one can be playing $.05/.10 NL, anyway.
My best friend Adam and I have launched a website to sell gambling e-books. The name of the site is Way of the Gambler, and you can find it by. . .well, by clicking on the link there, pretty much. Adam did an outstanding job designing the site, and now it's just a matter of advertising it before it takes off. Spread the word, people!
I'm back to working out 5 days a week again. . .my fitness test is coming in early October, and I decided that this year I wouldn't wait until 2-3 weeks before the test and run around going "OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD I'm gonna fail!!" But it hasn't killed me yet. . .hopefully it won't, either. Oh, and I finally have a significant long-term fitness goal. . .but I'll save that for another time.
Teaching has been great thus far. I just finished my first ISC (Initial Skill Course) class and passed them off to their next instructor. Two months spent molding the same young minds for 8 hours a day. . .man, those kids are going to be truly fucked up now, aren't they? (-: I don't have to pick up another class until the first week of October, but in the meantime I get to re-write part of the course and have all the fun that that entails.
And that's pretty much everything from this part of the world at the moment. Both people that still read this blog will be happy with the update, I'm sure. (-:

Seriously, I'm well aware it's an automated message. An actual message would mean that someone at that place actually gave a rat's ass about how their "administrators" were running the site. . .and we KNOW that's not the case.
Ah, well. . .the guy's been exposed. That's all I was really going for here.
EDIT: Oh, and here's yet another threat from him, via my Private Message box.
You get the weekend off. I explained in detail what went down to the last word. You now need to shut up. It's over and done with. There will be no more action taken no matter what you want. You are starting to smell like a troll. Drop it.
I wonder which explanation he's talking about. . .the one where he lied, the one where he plain ol' made shit up, the one where he insulted my intelligence, or the one where he covered for his racist little troll friend? So many excuses, it's tough to sort through them all.

Hey, you know that whole thing I was talking about at Pac. . .er, Racist Report?
Well, guess what? It turns out that it was all one big April Fool's Day joke.
Yeah, right. That's the excuse they're going with. Do you really think that this stupid fucker has that kind of intelligence or foresight?
Yeah, me either.
